This week as a class, we took a field trip to Balboa park to get pictures of people walking around for the first phase of the project. (The first phase is portrait photography.) Me and a group of friends walked around and took pictures of people doing there everyday activities around the park. These are some of my favorite pictures we took.In chemistry this week, we started coating our papers we are going to print our photos onto with the emulsion that we made. Our plan is to make negatives of our photos and print them on to these papers we are coating by exposing them to light and putting the in a chemical bath.

This week, we had a lot of open work time. In humanities, we are reading the book, "Of Mice and Men" and we are discussing it. We are talking about the characters, important moments in the story, what we think will happen next, and our opinions on events in the story. We also finished our 1,000 word paper. This was the paper were we chose a photo from the dust bowl from the photographer Dorothea Lange and write five different perspectives of the main subject in the photo. This is the first draft of my 1,000 word piece. This week in chemistry, we started to set up the dark room to make our emulsions for our photo paper. Todo this, every student was put on a different team that help set it up. I was on the light team. Our job was to make amber lights so we could still see but expose the emulsion. To make these lights, we used Trader Joes bags, led lights, and duct tape. We put the lights in the Trader Joes bag and duct taped them down in the bag so they wouldn't move around. Then we duct taped the top of the bag and made sure there was no other light coming out so emulations the wouldn't get exposed. To make the photo papers, we had to heat up the emulsion. Todo that, we built apparatuses that would hold thermometers, beakers, metal stands, a bowl, and a hot plate. We wold put the beakers and thermometers on the metal stand in the bowl and then we would put the bowl on the hot plate. we would put water in the bowl and we would keep it at around 55 degrees. This week we took portrait photos in a room where there was professional lighting so we could experiment with lighting for our photos. It was really cool to be able to experiment with all of the equipment to take cool portraits of everyone in my group. Here is my favorite picture of me that we took with the lighting. We also started a assignment called A Photo Worth 1,000 Words. We chose a photo from a photographer named Dorothea Lange in the 1930's and we had to write 5 different perspectives of the main subject in the photo.
This week, we learned about lighting for photos and we got to experiment with light to take portraits. We learned different positions for the light to get different types of shadows on the subjects face. Here is a example of one of those photos. We also read a Steinbeck piece about the peon class during the Great Depression. We wrote a short piece about how we felt about that situation and how we depend on them. Here is my piece about this prompt. CHEMISTRY
